How my NIN works..

16 times now I've been asked to explain/tell/show how I do this by different people over the last month.. Apparently what I do has given some really good results :D.. But it's incredibly difficult to describe it all in tells, and even in a PM.. So, I just decided I'm going to post it all here and whenever I'm asked about it again I'll just /point Livejournal.

Mainly I've been asked about all the equipment changes/macros I have, and what equipment I use when/where and such.. etc.

So, this update I'm just putting some time aside while offline finishing college stuff and post all the information I can about it... If you're interested then read on and click the LJ cut, if not then in a few days I'll give a normal update on what's going on. :)

I'll go over the macros I use first... Then the different equipment changes I have and when/here I use them... And lastly how I do it.^^;

  • Quick outline of Macros

I have 3 macro pallets put aside for NIN. I'll go over them quick now, and I'll explain the equipment changes sets I have more in the next section.

First Pallet

Usually used for exp PT tanking, soloing, and debuffing..

Here's the less complicated stuff about this pallet to start:

In all of my spells, Ctrl2+3 and Alt3 through Alt0, I have a line for /recast (spell) and a line for /ma (spell) <t> or <me>... I usually use Huton(wind) from the menu, couldn't fit it on the pallet.. No room for +ninjutsu gear with all the other stuff I have though ;;.. (btw, /recast helps a lot :D)

Nothing special about the others, Ctrl1 is for pulling.. Alt1 and Alt2 are both WS.. Ctrl0 is Provoke.. And Ctrl5 is berserk (usually with warcry).. Ctrl4 tells the PT  my TP(sometimes I put that in /echo) and gives me the /recast for Ni, Provoke, Berserk, Warcry.

Now here's the more complicated stuff:

The enmity macros on Ctrl6 and Ctrl7 have 12 equipment changes in total.. Changing practically everything I have on to all out enmity, and then Ctrl8 and Ctrl9 change me back to normal exp/tanking/soloing gear. They look like this:

Gives me something like +32 enmity with food... All of that gear has some sort of +enmity, with the Bomb Queen Ring being the only exception (use it to help make up for the HP I lost when I change to this gear)..

Normally what I would wear for tanking in an exp PT or soloing... Except sometimes I wear Rajas Ring/Sniper's Ring+1 in place of the BQ ring.. Depends on what we're fighting.

I'll go over how I use those equip changes later.. Just doing macros now. :)

Second Pallet

Used for weapon skill gear changes, and HNM tanking.

Alt1, Alt2, Alt3, Ctrl2, Ctrl3, Ctrl4, and Ctrl 0 are all the same as on the first pallet. Alt4 is just for activating sneak attack when I'm playing around on NIN/THF.

Ctrl6 and Ctrl7 switch me to the same enmity gear as before... But 8 and 9 switch me to all out evasion gear (+109 eva, 31 AGI). Ctrl 5 switches me to all out defense gear (+44 VIT, 640 def max).

Alt5 through Alt0 change me into different weapon skill gear (+50STR+50DEX).. I don't use Alt5 and Alt6 much anymore,  usually just Alt7 and Alt8 for weapon skill gear... Then Alt9 and Alt0 change me back to normal exp setup.

Third Pallet

Made this recently just for DD NIN..

Only thing different from normal on this pallet is Ctrl8 and Ctrl9 switch me into accuracy/attack gear(+69 acc, +27 attack, +48 DEX, +29 STR) .. With Ctrl6 and Ctrl7 switching me into the same pure STR/DEX gear as on pallet 2.

(all with food)

  • The Different Equipment Sets..
  • I have 6 total equipment sets I switch around between... Defense gear, Evasion gear, Enmity gear, Weapon Skill gear, DD NIN gear, Normal exp/tank/solo gear.

I'll outline those quick and describe the situations I use them in:

    Defense Gear
-Used primarly for HNMs/NMs or other mobs that I have to rely on defense rather than evasion, simply because they don't miss much or often clear Utsesumi shadows.. A good example would be Faust, Zipacna, or occasionally the IT MNK Aern mobs in sea while farming organs. Gives me around +44 VIT, 640 defense, and 1600 HP. I take pretty low damage with this setup, and still evade occasionally. :D

    Main: Earth Staff
    Sub: -
    Ranged: Ungar Boomerang
Ammo: Happy Egg (usually use boomergang)
    Head: Genbu's Kabuto
    Neck: Evasion Torque
    Ear1: Cassie Earring
    Ear2: (anything)
    Body: Kirin's Osode
    Hands: Seiryu's Kote
    Ring1: Mermaid Ring
    Ring2: Bomb Queen Ring
    Back: Nomad Mantle +1
    Waist: Warwolf Belt
    Legs: Koga/Byakko's Haidate
    Feet: Fuma-Sune Ate

It works pretty well... I was surprised how well I did on Faust with this setup :D.. Usually it's PLD tank only, but using this setup with some defense food I did fine holding hate and taking low damage :), with shadows helping when I could get it off in between the weapon skill spam ><.. Took it with a low amount of people so it was kinda rough, but we won.

Taking sub 100 damage from a difficult NM on NIN is sexy ;o... Averaged about 90 to 140 a hit ish.

    Evasion Gear
-Used primarily for HNMs/NMs also, and sometimes when I need to hold something for a certain amount of time.. It gives me about +114 evasion with blinding potions (always with my HNM gear) and nighttime, with +30 or so AGI.. Usually don't wear the rasetto feet though, and hands too.

    Main: Wind Staff
    Sub: -
    Ranged: Ungar Boomerang
    Ammo: -
    Head: Emperor's Hairpin
    Neck: Evasion Torque
    Ear1: Bat Earring
    Ear2: Bat Earring
    Body: Scorpion Harness
    Hands: Seiryu's Kote/Rasetto Tekko
    Ring1: Mermaid Ring
    Ring2: Bomb Queen Ring
    Back: Nomad Mantle +1/Toreador Cape
    Waist: Survival Belt
    Legs: Koga Hakama/Arhat's Hakama+1
    Feet: Fuma Sune-Ate/Rasetto Sune-ate

It's fun to play with, it gives just about any mob I've tanked a considerable accuracy cut.. Even Vrtra misses pretty often when I do this, brings his accuracy to something like 60% ish. The most fun though was holding the Orc Overlord NM for 40 minutes with this setup, the biggest chain of misses stretched to 18 in a row. XD

    Enmity
-I use this gear mainly for provoke, and it works great.. Enmity does not get removed if you change equipment (someone mentioned that they thought it did), a mob will never suddenly lose hate because you change equipment without any outside help. We often have two tanks for every LS event, and when pulling a mob my provoke with this setup always makes the mob come to me first, even though I change equipment right after :P.. I have a total of +32 currently with food.

    Main: Unji
    Sub: Unsho
    Ranged: Ungar Boomerang
    Ammo: -

    Head: Cachez-nez
    Neck: Harmonia's Torque
    Ear1: Eris Earring
    Ear2: Eris Earring
    Body: Arhat's Gi
    Hands: Yasha Tekko
    Ring1: Mermaid Ring
    Ring2: Bomb Queen Ring/Sniper Ring+1
    Back: Toreador Cape
    Waist: Warwolf Belt
    Legs: Arhat's Hakama+1
    Feet: Yasha Sune-Ate

Usually for tanking HNMs I keep this equiped unless I pull a lot of hate and have to tank over a long period  time.. At that point I'll change to full evasion gear to make it easier to tank, on top of the fact that the evil toreador cape is in my enmity set^^;...

    Normal exp PT tanking gear

    -I use this most often, normally for when I tank in exp PTs and solo, it balances damage with evasion.. Making me deal a decent amount of damage, while at the same time giving evasion to make blink tanking easier. Dealing pretty good damage while not getting hit builds up a lot of hait.. Getting hit while tanking takes away a lot of it. ;;

    Main: Unji
    Sub: Unsho
    Ranged: Ungar Boomerang
    Ammo: -
    Head: Optical Hat
    Neck: Evasion Torque
    Ear1: Cassie Earring
    Ear2: Suppinommi
    Body: Kirin's Osode
    Hands: Seiryu's Kote
    Ring1: Mermaid Ring
    Ring2: Sniper Ring+1
    Back: Nomad Mantle +1
    Waist: Survival Belt/Warwolf Belt
    Legs: Byakko's Haidate
    Feet: Fuma Sune-Ate

I think my proudest moment from this was holding hate on a weapon after a RNG doing a 1.5k slug shot :).. It didn't even turn to look at him. And no, it didn't die from the slug :p.. It was still at 20%.

    WS Gear

-If you WS at the start of a fight for 1k with Blade:Jin, you almost guarantee the mob will stay on you for the entire fight. Having a set of gear that pushes your Blade:Jin average 200-500 damage higher then normal each time helps as much if not more as Provoke. My set gives around +50DEX and +52 STR with food.

    Main: Unji
    Sub: Unsho
    Ranged: Ungar Boomerang
    Ammo: -
    Head: Optical Hat
    Neck: Spike Necklace
    Ear1: Cassie Earring
    Ear2: Minuet Earring
    Body: Kirin's Osode/Haubergeon+1
    Hands: Pallas Bracelets
    Ring1: Rajas Ring
    Ring2: Victory Ring
    Back: Amemet Mantel +1
    Waist: Warwolf Belt
    Legs: Byakko's Haidate
    Feet: Leaping Boots

I've posted the results in previous entries.. With the 1k Blade:Jins on Aura Statues/weapons and such in exp PTs.. Along with the others in dynamis and while soloing. Just got a new one yesturday too from sea:

<3 Hpemde mobs :D.. Didn't even bother casting Ni, wanted to WS it while it was berserked. XD

    DD Gear
-Not often used outside of playing a DD in dynamis and just for fun, I tried it recently in an exp PT.. It upped my damage considerably, but it made it more difficult to tank efficiently. Still kinda thinking about whether it would be good to use more often when tanking in exp PTs. Gives +69 accuracy, +24 attack, +29 STR, +47 DEX.

    Main: Unji
    Sub: Unsho
    Ranged: Lightning Bow+1
    Ammo: Demon Arrows
    Head: Optical Hat
    Neck: Peacock Charm
    Ear1: Minuet Earring
    Ear2: Suppinommi
    Body: Haubergeon +1
    Hands: Noritsune Kote
    Ring1: Sniper's Ring+1/Rajas Ring
    Ring2: Sniper's Ring+1
    Back: Amemet Mantel +1
    Waist: Warwolf Belt/Life Belt
    Legs: Byakko's Haidate
    Feet: Fuma-Sune Ate

Sadly I can't carry all of them on me at once XD, but I won't be bringing DD gear to an HNM camp, and likewise I won't have HNM gear at in exp PT... So it works out fine. I usually bring the evasion/defense/enmity to HNMs, and the enmity/WS gear/DD gear/normal gear to any kind of exp PT..

    ________________________________________

    • How I put it all together..

This took me a pretty long time to get used to, it's a lot of equipment changing for different actions and occasionally requires me to move up and down between pallet 1 and 2..

    For exp/normal tanking:

I stay on pallet 1 for most things I do.

When I want to provoke I hit Ctrl6 and Ctrl7 to change to the enmity gear, then Ctrl0 shortly after to Provoke, and then Ctrl8 and Ctrl9 to change back to normal gear. It sounds like a lot, but after doing it for so long I do this all in literally about a second, without having to think about it, it comes normally to me now..

    Doing that macros in a quick +31 enmity to my Provoke, and puts me back into the normal tank gear right after.. All in all it requires me to hit 5 macros for each Provoke. It's easier then it sounds though.^^;

For doing weapon skills I have to move up one to Pallet #2 quick, hit Alt6 and Alt 7 to change to STR/DEX gear, then do whatever weapon skill (Alt1 through Alt3), and follow that with Alt8 and Alt9 to change back to normal equipment.. Then I move back down to Pallet #1. This was the hardest to get used to, sometimes I forget to move back down a pallet and ended up hitting Ctrl5defense or Ctrl6+7evasion gear (equiping an earth/wind staff ><), so I made /echos to remind me.. Got it down pretty well now though. :)

I also will sometimes macro enmity for when I'm debuffing and/or using job abilities.. Normally just use it in provoke though. :)

    For HNMs:

This is just like exp.. But here I stay on pallet 2.. When I debuff though I either do it through the menu, type it out quick, or move down to pallet 1 and use the macro.

Since I usually tank in enmity gear (unless I have hate for a while), I don't switch gear as much.. I always try to provoke with the enmity gear on from hitting Ctrl6 and Ctrl7 though, then Ctrl8 and Ctrl9 have the full out evasion gear I use occasionally to tank. In an emergency of some sort where I know I'll be taking damage, or on certain annoying NMs/mobs, I have Ctrl5 to switch to all the defense gear.

    Not much else. :)

    For DD NIN:

Pretty simple.. I usually stay in the accuracy/attack gear all the time while I melee, and occasionally for weapon skills on higher evasion mobs. Otherwise just about everytime I weapon skill I change to the STR and DEX gear, it loses a lot of accuracy but I still don't seem to miss hits for Jin much at all, using both sets.

That's about all of it... It's not too complicated, but takes some getting used to.. And a lot of inventory space ; ;..

Feel free to ask if you want to know anything else..

Oh!.. And a quick question, just recently got all the items for a gorget togther (after 2 months><).. I'm curious what way you find out the element your weapon skill is based on?

    I've always heard it was based on the color next to the weapon skill, but recently I saw a post (with little proof I might add) saying that it was based on the element(s) that the weapon skill plays in skillchains... Now I'm confused, and don't want to get the wrong one. ; ;

Thanks in advanced for any information.^^

alot of ppl do a ton of switching for nin, personally I don't know how you get the inventory to do all that is pretty amazing in and of itself. I thought you may be interested in this though if you use windower, allows you to do multi-line macros, maybe save some space on that pallet http://ffxi.archbell.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=579

Usually I'm 58/60 at best when I bring my setup for exp PTs/HNMs ; ;.. More often then not I'm 59/60 or 60/60 though. ><

    But I <3 tool bags. :)

Read through that post in the link, and those macros look pretty awesome.. I'm not too great with the coding or whatever it is it says that I would need to do though^^;.. So not too sure if I could get it to work right even if I wanted to, lol.

Thanks for the link though, I'll see if I can try it out this weekend. :D

quick question, is there any lvl where I should be using enmity gear full time? I am currently 54 and find it a lot easier just to wear my eris/mermaid ring all the time, but i've been wondering if maybe I'm taking too much away from my eva by doing so. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

It's really up to you.. If you find that you're not evading enough and it's making your blink tanking more difficult, then you could sub in some evasion gear for the enmity instead and then just macro the enmity into provokes or whichever is easier for you.

I kind of came to doing this the same way myself.. In my static on NIN we would exp off IT++ mobs that would rarely miss, and wearing too much enmity gear would make tanking more difficult, and in the long run made my hate holding worse if I got hit.. At the same time though, the people in my static were all decked out in the best DD gear (rich LS friends, lol), so not using some type of enmity would make me a leech NIN that couldn't hold hate... So, I just decided to sub in evasion instead, and put enmity gear in macros for when I need it. It made tanking easier, and I held hate fine. :)

I first did that around level 64, and from there on I just added onto it and developed it more until it came to where it is at now.. As I described in this post.^^

So a good solution would probably be to just macro in enm for voke/ws? Because while I do enjoy getting HoT (Hate over Time... yeah I made that up >.>) I like to keep a loose Hate control. But I also realize that this is pre-sidewinder and the like, so I'm still kinda worried -_-;; Oh well, time will tell... one more question

Would it be feasible to macro in Haste gear after my utsusemi cast? I read somewhere the you don't have to wear it full time to get the minus from your timer, just at the beginning of the cast. I'm thinking about macroing in a quick belt (speed belt? I wish...) and my fumas after the casting of utsusemi. I realize I won't get the benefit of haste for my elemental ninjitsu, but I try to go slowly with that anyway, in order to develop tp. Good idea? Bad idea?

Which ever method you're more comfortable with..

Originally I tried to macro enmity into provokes, but it didn't work well for me.. Especially since the amount of enmity gear I had built up fast.

So I just made separate macros.. One or two that changed me into enmity gear, followed by my original provoke macro, and then another one or two that changed me back to normal gear.

And yes, you don't need to wear haste gear full time to get the effect on your Ni recast timer. You only need to have the haste equipment equiped when you finish casting the spell. However, if you equip it when you start casting the haste will apply for how long it takes to cast the spell as well as the /recast, so I recommend that over anything else. Faster cast = less interuptions.

    Oh, good question.. lol

There are 5 types of food I switch around between:

Sole Sushi: I use this for exp PTs, occasionally in the highland dynamis runs, lower level NMs that I can melee, and soloing any mobs that are VT..

Yellow Curry/Bison Steak: Used when I go out to solo mobs lower then VT, or for the Dynamis city runs..

Carbonara: One of the foods that I occasionally use while tanking HNMs/higher NMs/other.. It gives a bunch of HP, putting me at 1700 to 1750 HP depending on what I have equiped. Usually I only use at the out PT for Tiamat, since sometimes I kite corses and the extra HP really helps to have between all the ga magic and poison. Then occasionally I have to eat Stonega IIIs from Earth Elementals (can't stun them><). I don't really use it much tanking anymore though.

Tazvania Taco (sp? lol): Used more often while tanking HNMs, usually only if it's a mob that I know I'll get hit by occasionally/often.. Something like Fafnir/Nidhogg that spams wing clearing Utsesumi would be an example I might consider using this. I also use it when I know I'll be relying on my defense while tanking a mob rather then evasion, like for Faust/Zipacna, etc.

Doradi Sushi: Probably used most often while tanking higher NMs/HNMs.. It gives me another +3 enmity, and I figure that if I can't keep hate then there isn't much point in eating a taco for defense or carbonara for HP, so I most often will choose this for the extra enmity to help keep hate. I have to be more careful about mess ups though, defense and HP stay relatively low, so I get smacked pretty bad if I mess up.

Pretty nice setup all around. Just a couple suggestions ^^

In your defense gear setup, for your earring that has (anything), there's a pretty nice earring you could pick up.

    Mercenary's Earring http://ffxi.somepage.com/itemdb/2719

It's activated by a Warrior Subjob, so that's 2 more VIT, and they run only like 100k on my server so it's pretty nice for a defensive setup.

One more thing I like using in my defensive setup for my Ninja is Merman's Rings. Yes, I actually did buy two Merman's Rings for just the -4% Magic Damage taken a piece. I have a BQ Ring, but I would never use it on Kirin. It pretty much guarantees that every Heat Breath is going to hit you for 500 dmg. So I use Merman's Rings and laugh when I survive Stonega 4s with plenty of HP to spare. And yeah, I know most times Stonega is avoidable, but there's those few times when you just have to 'take one for the team' and eat one so you don't risk training it onto a half dozen people.

The only thing I'm still playing around with is figuring out a good way to balance using my Death Cape, err Toreador's Cape without it backfiring. +4 Enmity and +9 Evasion are just too nice not to try and wear it as much as possible. I currently macro it out when casting Utsusemi Ichi just because I know that's most likely when I'm going to be hit. Although on Wyrms I just find it best to never equip it, sad as it makes me.

    Good job tanking Faust btw. I'm never allowed to try. ; ;
Did you just spam debuffs to keep hate? I'm guessing people had to take it pretty easy damage wise to make sure he didn't go on a rampage though. ;)

Thanks for the recommendations, I'll look into that earring.. I have merman's rings from my RNG already, would really help at something like Kirin..

But, Heat Breath is not fire based damage... Me and a few others were experimenting with it the last Kirin run.

Like you can guess from the name, it's a breath attack, and it works just like the breath attacks from Tiamat/Fafnir/Nidhogg/Vrtra, etc. The damage you take is based on your position when he uses the attack, so if you're off to the side when he uses heat breath you'll take a small amount of damage, but if you're infront of him you'll take max damage (usually 500). We did 3 Kirin runs just yesturday, and by simply running to the side ASAP when I saw the move in the chat log I was able to avoid the 500 damage breath attacks pretty easily. Wearing a BQ ring I took 120 ish damage each time I attempted to dodge it, and it was the same damage with sune-ates on.

Normally I just wear the Toreador's Cape as part as my enmity set, as much as I'd love to benefit from the evasion... Found it safest to just use a HQ nomad mantle instead.

Tanking Faust I didn't really have much time to spam debuffs, only the normal blind/slow/paralyze with an occasional elemental attack.. It would interupt casting way too much to do anything else, mostly I just spammed provoke and JAs whenever I could, and then fit the debuffs inbetween when I had the chance.

Huh, I never noticed the breath doing less damage when standing to the side. I guess I'll try side stepping a bit when I see it come up in the log. I did know it was a breath attack since wearing Merman's Rings did nothing to reduce the damage. Hard to say if they help with Whirlwind or Sandstorm since the damage is all over the place with those. I could try sneaking a Jelly Ring on when no one is looking >.>

And one more thing, (I've seen this discussion a thousand times but...) once upon a time I had an Arhat's Gi+1, but I sold it when I got my Osode. I'm still debating buying one back though, and picking up an Arhat's Jinpachi+1 at the same time. With an Earth Staff that gives me 35% phy damage reduction. The reason I don't like it is the amount of HP I would have to give up though. 50 from the Kabuto and 30 (converted) from the Osode is a lot. There's also a loss of 25 VIT and a fair bit of defense. But at least the Gi seems like a fair tradeoff for a lot of situations, 9% phy dmg reduction for 10 VIT, some defense, and 30 HP (oh and some AGI). It's fair to say that anything that can hit for 200+ a single hit, it would be better off wearing the Gi. Geush Urvan comes to mind ~_~

Heh I guess I lied, one more thing. Have you ever tested out CHR gear? Something I keep meaning to try out is the effect of CHR on two things. Provoke Strength and loss of hate over time. Pretty much everyone I know agrees that high CHR keeps hate from degrading (which is why Koenig is loaded with the stuff, and why HNMs start eating Bards if they don't log out enough, even when they do nothing). But it's always seemed to me that if I provoke with just some +enmity on (not a full blown setup) and if a Paladin with some Koenig provokes (with almost no +enmity), the monster goes for the Paladin first. Maybe there's some equation similar to a lot of the raw stats in the game, like 2 CHR = 1 enmity (just talking for provoke here)

    I at least keep telling myself that I'm going to pick up +CHR rings and the few pieces of +CHR gear I can so that I could at least swap that in when I'm not actually doing anything, and so my hate doesn't degrade as fast. But I've never heard if anyone has used it with much success or not. Doesn't help that I'm lazy and I already have too much gear as it is. ^^;

Oh... Like 3 weeks later I realize I never replied to this. XD

    Sorry, lol..

I like defense/VIT/HP gear more then -damage reduction, but it's just my preference.. If you could get enough -damage taken I'm sure it'd give pretty good results too.

CHR gear does not effect the STR of Provoke or Debuffs, it was said by SE themself in an interview almost a year ago.. It only effects the ability to Charm and the strength of that Charm for Beastmasters, and how well BRD can land debuffs on HNMs with their songs. It also works as a damage modifier for Dancing Edge and Shadowswitch, and apparently also has an effect on how often the "Killer" effects happen. But it gives nothing other then those properties.

BRDs get so much hate from spamming debuffs (like we do), playing songs over and over on people with hate (gives a lot of hate over time), and curing PT members.. All that combined together with the fact that they rarely have any -enmity at all unlike most other jobs = they will pull hate pretty often.

Glad you cleared that up, cause I was using jack-o-lantern on ninja for some time (love that eva +10 <.<) and noticed it gave -10 chr.So I was afraid my hate was lacking. Also you say chr helps killer effects, which would mean it practically nuls the arcane killers the pumpkin gives. :/

wow thanks for all this info, ia go home and try this. and I have an answer to your recast timers. there is a add for the windower that shows all the timers for every job ability and magic you just used. I <3 this, it sits in a little transparent window in the corner, now all i gotta do is look up and see when Ni, Voke or Ichi is up. so beautiful, I'll try and find a way to post it so i don't get castrated.

FFXIrecaster maybe not so much a plugin as a program that runs with windower, since you have to start it outside of FFXI.

Quick question, why do you prefer Bat Earring's w/ +15 eva when blinded over Melody earrings w/ +5 evasion skill as latent that kicks in when you have any song on you? j/w

+30 evasion versus +10 evasion skill?

I don't always have songs on me, and I almost always have blinding pots... Easy Alchemy recipe.

I'm pretty certain the +30 evasion would give better results than +10 evasion skill though regardless.

Idk if I agree with that >.<, I was always told that Evasion Skill > Evasion. I guess theres no way to tell which is better than the other, or is there? O.o

It is... Evasion skill is better than Evasion.

But, 30 Evasion versus 10 evasion skill? No contest... If it was 30 evasion versus 30 Evasion Skill, then yeah evasion skill would definately be better. Maybe even 20 evasion skill or 15 would be better or at least even with the benefit of 30 evasion, but just 10 is way too small to compete with 30 evasion IMO.

+10 evasion skill is 2 lvls (like being 77), it makes tanking an IT mob like tanking a VT mob. I never got much out of just plain +eva gear, but I guess I can agree to disagree ^^b

I have a question about NIN tanking pre Utsusemi: Ni, and how to know exactly when its ready
    I just use:

    /ma "Utsusemi: Ichi"
    /wait35
    /Recast "Utsusemi: Ichi"

Same with voke only /wait 30

But often I don't get the recast message between the battlespam so I made a macro Ctrl-0:
    /recast Provoke
    /recast "Utsusemi: Ichi"

If you have any suggestions on Utsu macro's pls do share with me, and also on how to time utsu
since its a 30 sec recast and only 3 shadows I get hit pretty often (still in the valkurm stage atm)
So if you have any ideas on tanking with Ichi only that would be greatlt appreciated, ty ^.^

btw Rukenshin, I was DRK first but jst looking at my live jourl-nal made me feel like picking up war and nin up, thnx ur a source of inspiration to ur readers, lol -,-

I usually put the /recast in the macro, so it looks something like this:

    /ma "Utsusemi: Ni"
    /recast "Utsusemi: Ni"

So anytime I want to see the specific recast I'll hit the macro and know it... For a while I used to have one single macro with 3-5 lines of abilites/ninjutsu spells that had all the recasts there, and I'd hit it whenever I wanted to know. I ended up getting rid of it though for more macro space, and instead just put the /recasts in my TP macro.

After changing it though I kind of grew away from using it. I still keep the /recasts in my TP macro, but I don't use it much. I normally just hit the macro for the spell/ability to find out, but even when I do I almost don't even pay attention to the recasts anymore... After doing it for so long I kind of know/feel when something "should" be ready without looking at recasts.

With all the +Evasion gear that you have (I believe that you mentioned you hat +114) how often would you say you evade attacks from the sky gods? Byakko specifically, but I'm wondering about all 4 (-Kirin).

    Thx ^^

In full evasion gear if I can land blind on them I evade about 40-70% of attacks, it fluctuates a lot... Same story for the other HNMs and such.

I carry all of them, but mainly I only use for 3 things:
    1) Debuff the mob so BLMs get less resists on whichever spell of choice.
    2) Debuff the mob to ice to help Paralyze land, or to Earth to help Slow land.
    3) Magic Bursts.

Other than those three I don't really use them much, once in a while I'll go through the wheel if I have no other abilities/debuffs to use at the time, but not too often.
